Ferret shelters around the country are loaded with unwanted ferrets that have been discarded for one reaon or another.
Sometimes a parent will purchase a ferret for their child and when they move on to a new toy, the ferret is abandoned or neglected. Other times a ferret owner is forced to give up a great pet because they move to a location where ferrets are illegal. There are many different reasons why sweet, gentle, and wonderful pets are left behind. All they need is a forever home, the proper love and care, and they will reward you with smiles and happiness for years to come.
You can search for your local ferret shelter at Petfinder.
Please feel free to use this poster, or create one like it to encourage others to adopt before buying.

Please send healing thoughts and prayers to our Cupcake. She has been battling an illness and yestrday she pulled a lamp off my desk and broke her leg. They can't do surgery, so they are hoping that a splint will work.
It looks like Jerry knows how to enjoy Winter! This photo was posted to the Ferret Photography Group on flickr.
Oscar and Telly are best friends. We brought them home back in June of 2005.
They had been dumped at a local pet store that sells all kinds of animals from foxes to fish. They were in a dirty, wire cage with nothing to sleep on, and only each other for comfort. They were hungry, dirty, smelly, and covered with mites. We were waiting for Chinese take-out from the restaurant next-door when we stopped in and saw them. They were so sad and sweet that we took them right home. They are just the sweetest boys. I can't imagine why anyone would have dumped them like that.

Oh Good Lord! How could someone leave a beautiful little ferret outside to freeze? I understand that the person who dropped this ferret off was trying to do the right thing. Perhaps they were turned away from the APL or the Humane Society, but that is no reason to leave an animal out in the cold without telling someone. Please, please, please.. if you can no longer take care of your animals, please make sure they make it to a safe place. Someone could have at least knocked on the door or called to make sure someone was there to bring the animal in.
Our own Princess Buttercup was dumped like this. She was found nearly starved to death in a box with her cagemates. Someone did not want her anymore, so they just dumped her. Fortunately someone found her before it was too late. She is the sweetest ferret. I can't imagine why anyone would want to get rid of her.
